We Certainly Couldn't Afford Them

It's no wonder that they offered to break the payment into installments. If my calculations are right, $14 in 1971 would be worth a trifle over $103 in today's money. Though I certainly would want to have them, I can't imagine asking Mom and Pop for that amount with any real hope.

Believe It or Nay

Alongside the much-touted Walt Disney Comics Digests, we also had a few copies of ‘horror’ digests like Boris Karloff Presents or The Twilight Zone. But my favorite by far was Ripley’s Believe It or Not, with its collection of ghost stories, bizarre coincidences, and strange sightings. Its legend and lore sank deep into our young brains, and its striking phrases and images became part of our ‘vocabulary’. Here are a handful of panels that particularly impressed me, including some from later sources like a strange hardback collection of the originally sized comics that appeared in Briesemeister only after I had left, but which my brother checked out and brought home.
