The Highwayman, by Alfred Noyes

I read this poem, with these illustrations, when I was 9 years old and in 4th Grade. Their heady brew of mystery, love, and death made a deep impression on me. And they were in Volume 2 of an old edition of Childcraft, "Storytelling and Other Poems"!  I was even more deeply moved by the cover done by Loreena McKennitt in her 1997 album The Book of Secrets. Ten minutes of poignant trauma. That ghostly galleon of a moon and that road of a ribbon of moonlight over a purple moor have gone threading through my thoughts for almost five decades.
