Ogdred Weary

Amphigorey (Softcover), Amphigorey Too (Softcover), Amphigorey Also (Softcover), and Amphigorey Again (Hardback), by Edward Gorey.

‘Amphigory’ is a nonsense verse or composition; a rigmarole with apparent meaning which proves to be meaningless. ‘Amphigorey’ is a collection of the works written and illustrated by Edward Gorey, often just as portentous and nonsensical, and mostly done in an ostensible Victorian/Edwardian style. I had been introduced to his work from illustrations in books like “Hauntings: Tales of the Supernatural” but hadn’t identified him as an artist. That happened in high school when I found the first Amphigorey book in the library, and his animated introduction began to be used for the PBS show, “Mystery!”. I was pleased to find a softcover copy when I was in college, and from then on, I followed the series until I got the Hardback ‘Amphigorey Again’ (published posthumously).

Ranking: Essential.

File Code: Anthologies. Nonsense. Art. Softcovers and one Hardback.

Ascending Peculiarity: Edward Gorey on Edward Gorey. Interviews Selected and Edited by Karen Wilkin.

Acts as a sort of informal biography of the artist, full of his own work and photos from his life. A very eccentric man whose career spanned half a century; he passed away in 2000.

Ranking: Keeper.

File Code: Interviews. Biography. Softcover.
