The Medicom line of the original Planet of the Apes movies. We were very involved with the Mego action figures in the Seventies; they were central to the cast of characters in our ‘playings’. Something about their parallel parody of human society released our imagination. Humans were defined and restrictive. An intelligent ape could do things, whatever we imagined, while still retaining a different kind of personhood. I never particularly cared for the human figures in any line. John has lately worked on restoring our original Megos (which of course we never threw away). Anyway, this Medicom line, while not having the flexibility of Megos (inaction figures?) are very accurate sculpts. I know two I don’t have: Taylor and the Statue of the Lawgiver. Oh, and in the background of the picture there is a very heavy little statuette of St. Anthony that I’ve been using to prop up the more recalcitrant figures.
And
here are a few of the Mezco Planet of the Apes figures, from the newest film interpretations
starring Andy Serkis. Look at that orangutan! I have quite a few of the Tim
Burton Apes movie, which will be coming up later. Included: a couple of
Winged Monkeys from Todd McFarlane’s Twisted Oz.
