After
watching Disney’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea followed by the
Harryhausen/Scheer ‘sequel’ Mysterious Island last week, I’ve been
thinking about old movies (some well-known, some more obscure) that I would
like to get copies of sometime. Starting with the ‘steampunk’ aesthetics
suggested by the Nemo movies, I wandered through science fiction, fantasy, and
horror; many of the films are characterized by the bright colors and antiquated
effects of the 50’s and 60’s. Here are devils, dragons, ghosts, dinosaurs, and aliens. I
stuck with DVD’s (my preferred format) and things on Amazon where available.
The movies range from 1941 to 1971 and are in no particular order; a few are
quite expensive. The movie I know least about is The Tales of Hoffman,
an operatic 'ballet' film, but the glimpses I’ve had of it hints that it‘s oddity and
design aesthetic puts it at least adjacent to these more ‘popular’ adventure
films.
