Pirates of the Caribbean
came out in 2003. It was based (loosely) on the venerable Disney ride and
revived the moribund pirate genre which had been languishing for some time. It
proved so popular that the figure of Captain Jack Sparrow was inserted into the
refurbished park ride, “Talk Like a Pirate Day” became an annual vogue, and an
ongoing movie franchise was born. The first three were pretty good, but perhaps
that’s as far as they should have gone. It feels like they’re circling the rim
of the Maelstrom now. But NECA put out a fine series of figures. There are a
couple other Captain Barbossa toys, by different companies; one is cartoonish. Included
here are park exclusives from the original ride; Kameron’s figures from this
line are shown in Out of the Toybox (65).
