Oh, the Humanity!

“The more I love humanity in general the less I love man in particular. In my dreams, I often make plans for the service of humanity, and perhaps I might actually face crucifixion if it were suddenly necessary. Yet I am incapable of living in the same room with anyone for two days together. I know from experience. As soon as anyone is near me, his personality disturbs me and restricts my freedom. In twenty-four hours I begin to hate the best of men: one because he’s too long over his dinner, another because he has a cold and keeps on blowing his nose. I become hostile to people the moment they come close to me. But it has always happened that the more I hate men individually the more I love humanity.”

― Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov

Because it's too abstract. It's easy to love 'humanity' - that's a grandiose statement that a narcissist might make so that they look good and feel good. It's much harder to love your irritating brother, your intemperate father, your scrounging neighbour, your scheming wife. Love is only love when it is specific, not abstract. – AbjectSeaUrchin

The World State by G. K. Chesterton

Oh, how I love Humanity,
With love so pure and pringlish,
And how I hate the horrid French,
Who never will be English!

The International Idea,
The largest and the clearest,
Is welding all the nations now,
Except the one that's nearest.

This compromise has long been known,
This scheme of partial pardons,
In ethical societies
And small suburban gardens—

The villas and the chapels where
I learned with little labour
The way to love my fellow-man
And hate my next-door neighbour.

Justice is the virtue of the government, while Charity is that of the Church (or private citizen). You don’t want either institution usurping the role of the other. While Democrats might support cheap labor, drugs, and sex slaves privately, legally the government can’t condone these things without perpetrating injustice on its own citizens. Romans 13:4 “For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.”

"Where does it say illegal immigrants are criminals?" "In the word illegal."
