Wideo Wednesday: The Amazing Disappearing Apologist

I've posted before about my enthusiasm for Jimmy Akin as a Catholic apologist (with a very Babellian interest in strange phenomena). I haven't been so interested in his  personal weight loss saga (featuring intermittent fasting) until I read Dr. Fung's book The Obesity Code, also featuring intermittent fasting. Using a combination of Fung's regimen and Akin's recipes, in one day of dieting I lost 3 1/2 pounds and my glucose (dangerously high) went down 70 points! Now, I know it's easy to lose weight when you just start a diet (probably most of it was water weight) but I think I might have just hit on a formula that works for me, if I can keep it up. Yesterday I had one meal in the evening of konjac noodles with Raos tomato and basil sauce, and it filled me up. It's almost 9 AM in the morning as I post this, and I'm not even hungry yet. I'm going to see if I can keep this up. Lent fasting begins in March, and that and Jimmy's example might keep me going for a while. There are, of course, a lot of foods that I can have (suggestions are listed in the Code) but here are some from Akin's YouTube posts.

Into the Archive: To Pearce My Akin Heart

Teaching with Authority, by Jimmy Akin (2008, Catholic Answers Press, Softcover, 425 pgs.)

How to Cut Through Confusion and Understand What the Church Really Says. “Teaching with Authority is a unique, valuable, and long-overdue resource for all Catholics as well as those inquiring about the Faith. It will help deepen your understanding of what the Church teaches by showing you (maybe for the first time) how and why and where it does. Not another catechism or Catholicism for beginners book, Teaching with Authority isn’t about understanding specific teachings of the Faith (even the complicated and misunderstood ones) but rather about understanding Catholic teaching itself. Where does the Church s teaching authority come from? How do we weigh dogmas versus practices, doctrines versus disciplines, conciliar declarations versus papal interviews? How do we sort through the many kinds of ecclesial documents and determine their relative authority and relevance? And, in an age when accusations of heresy fly regularly across social media, with competing sides eager to paint the other as unfaithful to Catholic tradition or to the current pope, Jimmy also tackles the issues of incredulity, apostasy, and schism showing you how to recognize different forms of dissent and respond to them fittingly.” – Amazon. (from the back cover).

Solzhenitsyn: A Soul in Exile (Revised and Expanded Version), by Joseph Pearce (2011, Ignatius Press, Softcover, 392 pgs.)

“Based on exclusive, personal interviews with Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Joseph Pearce's biography of the renowned Russian dissident provides profound insight into a towering literary and political figure.

From his pro-Communist youth to his imprisonment in forced labor camps, from his exile in America to his return to Russia, Solzhenitsyn struggled with the weightiest questions of human existence: When a person has suffered the most terrible physical and emotional torture, what becomes of his spirit? Can science, politics and economics truly provide all of man's needs?

In his acclaimed literary and historical works, Solzhenitsyn exposed the brutality of the Soviet regime. Most famous for his novel One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich and his three-volume expose of the Russian police state, The Gulag Archipelago, he won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1970.

Solzhenitsyn's Christian faith deeply informed his response to the inhumanity of modern materialism as it took shape in twentieth- century Russia. His critique applies not only to Communism, however, but also to the post-Christian capitalism now dominant in the West. On the spiritual, cultural, and socio-political level, his writings still have much to teach the world.

This book also contains a gallery of rare photographs.” – Amazon.

I decided to finally order the Solzhenitsyn book for a variety of reasons. For one, Mike had always been interested in him since high school, realizing that he was a force in Russian literature, which was one of his areas of special attraction. I remember seeing his copy of The Gulag Archipelago and wondering what it was like. For another, Solzhenitsyn had just been the subject on Joseph Pearce’s The Authority (a program available on YouTube), and the fact that Pearce had actually met and communicated with him and produced the only biography that was authorized by the Russian author. That Maurice Baring (whom I have been reading) was in his day (before the revolution) an authority on Russia and the Russian people, and I was reading much about the country in his works, also piqued my interest. So it seemed quite obvious that the biography was indicated for my next big read.

Akin Again: Once More into the Archives

The Fathers Know Best: Your Essential Guide to the Teachings of the Early Church (Paperback – November 30, 2010. 452 pages.)

“The Fathers Know Best: Your Essential Guide to the Teachings of the Early Church is a unique resource. It introduces you to the teachings of the first Christians in a way no other work can. It is specially designed to make it easy for you to find the information you want and need. Amazing features in this fact-packed book include: - More than 900 quotations from the writings of the early Church Fathers, as well as from rare and important documents dating back to the dawn of Christian history. - Mini-biographies of nearly 100 Fathers, as well as descriptions of dozens of key early councils and writings. - A concise history of the dramatic spread of Christianity after Jesus told his disciples to evangelize all nations. - Special maps showing you where the Fathers lived, including many little-known and long-vanished locations. - A guide to nearly 30 ancient heresies, many of which have returned to haunt the modern world. - The Fathers' teaching on nearly 50 topics, including modern hot-button issues like abortion, homosexuality, and divorce. This groundbreaking work presents the teachings of the early Christians in a way unlike any other book. It flings open the doors of the crucial but little-known age covering the birth of Christianity and the triumphant march of the gospel throughout the ancient world.” - Wikipedia

Today the third (and final) of my Jimmy Akin books arrived, and quite early too, so my visit to the mailbox was not entirely the burning death-march it's been in the horrifying Texas summer heat. I'm halfway through The Bible is a Catholic Book and shall probably finish that sometime this evening. It's a very compelling read, well-organized and fact-laden, but flowing with historical interest.

The Twin Perspectives of Faith and Reason: Into the Archives

The Bible is a Catholic Book (2009, 181 pages) and A Daily Defense: 365 Days (Plus One) to Becoming a Better Apologist (2006, 384 pages), by Jimmy Akin.

“In The Bible Is a Catholic Book, Jimmy Akin shows how the Bible cannot exist apart from the church. In its origins and its formulation, in the truths it contains, in its careful preservation over the centuries, and in the prayerful study and elucidation of its mysteries, Scripture is inseparable from Catholicism. This is fitting, since both come from God for our salvation.” _Amazon.

“Do you want to learn how to defend and explain the existence of God, the reliability of the Bible, the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist and scores of other truths that we Catholics believe but you don't have a lot of time? Jimmy Akin has done the hard work for you. All you need is five minutes a day. In A Daily Defense, Jimmy compiles 365 challenges that Catholics often hear from skeptics and non-Catholics about God, Jesus, Scripture, morality, Mary, history, and a host of doctrines and teaches you how to answer them. Combining deep learning with decades of experience explaining Catholic belief and practice on a popular level, he cuts to the heart of each subject, offering pithy but powerful replies that are both effective and easy to master. A Daily Defense is perfect reading before bed, for down time or prayer time, part of a regular routine or picked up on the go. Whatever your day is like, reading just a few minutes a day is guaranteed to equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to defend the Catholic Faith.” – Amazon.

“Born in 1965 in Corpus Christi, Texas, Jimmy Akin grew up in Fayetteville, Arkansas. As a child, he attended services at the local Church of Christ with his parents but became interested in the New Age movement as a teenager. During his time in college, Akin encountered the preaching of the televangelist Eugene "Gene" Scott and became a Christian, finding a denominational home in the conservative Presbyterian Church in America, and wanted to be a pastor or seminary professor.

“Soon after becoming a Christian, Akin met his future wife, Renee Humphrey, who had been baptized a Catholic but held many New Age beliefs. Over the course of their relationship, Renee reverted to Catholicism and resumed practicing the faith. They were married in 1988 and Akin soon after converted to Catholicism in 1992. Later that year, Humphrey died of colon cancer.

“He is a senior apologist for Catholic Answers. Since 2018, Akin has been the co-host (alongside Dom Bettinelli) of Jimmy Akin's Mysterious World, a podcast examining mysteries in the areas of the paranormal and true crime.” – Wikipedia.

I only have to add that Jimmy might almost have been designed as an apologist to appeal to me. Having several times been referred to as ‘a cyborg sent from the future to defend the Church’ and ‘probably a Time Lord’, he has a wide knowledge of popular culture and will quote it to help illustrate his explications and analysis of religion or strange phenomena in a logical manner that is punctuated with a rather dry humor. After watching his shows for over a year or more I decided it was about time to invest in a few of his books.
