Ralph Bakshi's "The Lord of the Rings": VHS

I bought my VHS copy from Robin's Bookstore in San Marcos in the early Eighties, for $70. In 2020 dollars, that's about $170. I think that proves my dedicated fanaticism adequately. I had to think long and hard before laying out that kind of money. It wasn't the best movie it could have been, but it was Tolkien, dammit, and I had to have it. It certainly has great moments, and is part of the context of my youth.

A fairly new release, in a white plastic clamshell, soon superceded by a DVD.

Faeries: VHS

Faeries is a 1981 animated special that appeared on CBS in the United States. It is based on the 1978 book Faeries, described and illustrated by Brian Froud and Alan Lee, directed by Lee Mishkin with animation direction by Fred Hellmich, and executive produced by Thomas W. Moore, Anne Upson and Jean Moore Edwards.  The special first aired on CBS on February 25, 1981.

A young man, Oisin "(pronounced O-sheen)" returns home with a group of huntsmen from an unsuccessful hunt when a deer, revealing herself to be Niamh (pronounced Nee-am and Nee’uv) a faerie princess, appears to him. She takes him to her father, the Faerie King, whose Shadow has come to life and now threatens Faerie Land. The King begs Oisin to travel to Squalor Web Castle and defeat the evil Shadow. Oisin and his faerie helper Puck travel to the castle, encountering hags, goblins, merrows and other faerie creatures. They also save a kobold from evil trows. Eventually the three arrive at the lake, beyond which sits the castle. After meeting an Irish faerie who attempts to dissuade them from their mission, they arrive at the castle. Avoiding redcaps, the Shadow's evil soldiers, Oisin makes his way to the tallest tower, defeats the Shadow, and joins a celebration in Faerie Land before returning to his human companions. - Wikipedia.

You Can't Take It With You: VHS

In the Moss Hart/George S. Kaufman play You Can't Take It With You, the unhappy, socialite, grimly businesslike parents of Tony Kirby come to meet the free-spirited, unpretentious family of his girlfriend Alice Sycamore. The following exchange occurs after the Kirbys have appeared unexpectedly a day early and are getting to know the Sycamores through the detritus of their interests that clutter the house. Mr. Kirby spots a Meccano set (like an Erector set) belonging to Paul, Alice's father.

Kirby: (he sees Paul's Meccano boat model): Hello! What's this? I didn't know there were little children in the house.

Paul: Oh, no. That's mine.

Kirby: Really? Well, I suppose every man has his hobby. Or do you use this as a model of some kind?

Paul: No, I just play with it.
