Some episodes of shows I
watched long, long ago and which no doubt had varying degrees of influence on
me. The exceptions, of course, are the stop-motion episodes of the PBS show Long
Ago and Far Away (1989 -1990). The Wizard of Id appeared as a short
on the long-lost Chuck Jones show Curiosity Shop (1971). Robin
Hoodnik was an episode of the Saturday Superstar Movie (1972 -1974).
The Reluctant Dragon and Mr. Toad Show (1970; rerun during 1971 -1972; Rankin/Bass)
and Dr. Dolittle (1970-71; Depatie/Freleng) were part of the rather
groovy Edwardian-influenced wave that was spreading throughout the culture at
the time. I mentioned the Off to See the Wizard (1967) hand puppet I saw
in first grade; I only recently found out it was not a show in and of itself,
but a framework device animated by Chuck Jones to showcase family movies. It
had quite a bit of merchandising, though. Did I ever actually see it? I would
have been four at the time of the show, just at the right age to have some kind
of inchoate memory. Probably never know for sure now.
